Medium Sized Abalone Shells (4 1/2″ – 5″ Shells). Perfect Smudge Trays, from the only source of farmed, Sustainable Abalone Shells online. They are tumble cleaned, then hand scrubbed in a vinegar solution. Environmentally Friendly, these Distinctively Green Pearlescent Shells are not sprayed with a polyurethane finish, and not ever poached from wild populations.

Once an abundant food source in California, a massive surge in immigration during the 1800s drove the Native Abalone near to extinction. Environmental Regulations followed in an effort to sustain the hearty mollusks, but they never fully recovered. Farmed Abalone became standard during the mid-1900s. Eventually, abalone recipes fell out of favor and the farms shut down. These quality shells are reclaimed and repurposed.
